This "Bassar" recipe is a winner for many reasons. First off, it is really delicious. Secondly, it is pretty low sodium. Thirdly, it can work as either an appetizer or a main dish, so it is pretty versatile. Bassar is just the Hebrew word for meat. But this Bassar is so much more than just plain meat. The mix of spices combined with the meat bring an incredible flavor that make you feel like you are eating in the streets of the Shuk in Jerusalem.
You can pair this Bassar with so many different things for a quick weeknight dinner, such as a LoSo Pita, Nachos, Tortillas or Tacos. Or alternatively, serve it as an appetizer at lunch on Shabbat with Chummus. That is why I also consider this recipe a building block. It can be a foundation for so many other recipes.
Trader Joe's Taco Shells, which contain 0 mg of sodium for a serving size of 2 taco shells are a great option to pair up with this meat. Add in some chopped Israeli Salad, and some rice ad LoSo beans, and you have a great taco. If you want to go the tortilla route instead, check out Chi Chi's White Corn Style Tortillas. They have only 15 mg of sodium for 2 tortillas.
If you want to go the full Israeli route, load up a LoSo pita with Bassar, Israeli salad, Woodstock Organic Bread and Butter Pickle Chips, Chummus and Techina. The real trick to this one is making your own pita, as the store bought ones can be very high in sodium. One option is to use the Toufayan Smart Pockets (NOT their pitas). And NOT the low card smart pocket. You can choose from one of their three flavors - Whole Wheat, Everything, or Organic Sprouted Whole Wheat. Each of these flavors only have only 50 mg of sodium in one "pocket."
But any way you go with this Bassar, you won't be going wrong!
