Salsa tastes great, and goes as a dip with so many different types of snacks. Not only does it taste great, but it can also be a healthy snack...that is when it is actually low sodium. In addition to being low calorie, and hydrating, many of the ingredients in salsa are good sources of Vitamin C. Often, the only catch is the sodium. I have finally found a low sodium salsa product that is also Kosher -- Texas Pete Medium Low Sodium Salsa.
The table below shows a list of the top jarred Kosher salsas, and their sodium levels. They are HIGH! And who do you know that only eats 2 Tbsp of salsa? Um, that would be no one that I know.
  | Product Name | Serving Size | Sodium (mg) |
---|---|---|---|
Texas Pete Medium Salsa Low Sodium | 2 Tbsp (31 Grams) | 45 | |
Trader Joe's Chunky Salsa | 2 Tbsp (30 Grams) | 170 | |
Trader Joe's Thick and Chunky Salsa | 2 Tbsp (30 Grams) | 135 | |
Herr's Medium Chunky Salsa | 2 Tbsp (30 Grams) | 160 | |
Thick & Chunky Medium Salsa | 2 Tbsp (35 Grams) | 210 | |
Kirkland Organic Salsa | 2 Tbsp (30 Grams) | 120 | |
Southwest Medium Salsa | 2 Tbsp (31 Grams) | 160 |
That is why this find is so exciting...only 45 mg of sodium for 2 Tbsp of salsa! And since we all know we are eating more than that, you can still have a decent salsa snack for under 100 mg of sodium.
But what is a good salsa without chips? There are options, but you need to look for them!
Trader Joe's has a salt free tortilla chip in the Trader Joe's Organic White Corn Tortilla Chip. They have 0 mg of sodium, so when paired with the Texas Pete Salsa, you have a very low sodium snack. Whole Foods also has an option in their Unsalted Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips, which also have 0 mg of sodium. Another good possibility are the Xochitl Mexican Style Tortilla Chips, which also have 0 mg of sodium. You can buy these in your local supermarket, or at Healthy Heart Market.
If you are looking for a little more variety in your chips, Trader Joe's has a Quinoa and Black Bean Infused Tortilla Chip as well as a Flaxseed Tortilla Chip. They are both relatively low in sodium, at 50 mg for a 1 oz serving (or about 8 chips). Obviously, the salt free ones are better at 0 mg of sodium. Keep in mind that both the Quinoa and Black Bean and Flaxseed Tortilla Chips are dairy, which rules them out for a Shabbat afternoon snack.
Garden of Eatin has a Blue Chip with No Salt Added, which only has 10 mg of sodium for a serving size of 1 oz (or about 11 chips).
There are definitely chip options, and when paired with Texas Pete LoSo Medium Salsa make for a great snack!
