This week's featured product is Rumford Reduced Sodium Baking Powder, with 35 mg of sodium for an 1/8 tsp. Although this product is NOT the lowest sodium baking powder out there, it is one of the best! There are other lower sodium options for baking powder -- including Hain Gluten Free Featherweight Baking Powder and Ener-G Baking Powder. They are both 0 mg of sodium. But what I really like about this product is that it is relatively easy to find in your local supermarket. It is also less expensive than the other 0 mg sodium products.
Although Ener-G is a great product, you have to remember to double it in your recipe. I find that confusing, and I always manage to mess it up! In addition, I find that the final product generally has a certain tang to it. I am not a huge fan, but appreciate that there are options out there. Hain's, I still need to try, so the jury is out! The price is a bit hefty though, and it isn't so easy to find on your supermarket or Amazon shelf.
With Rumford, your baked goods taste delicious, with less sodium, even if not 0. I have used it in multiple baked goods, and always have a great product when I am done. 1 Tsp of Rumford has 280 mg of sodium. Spread out across an entire recipe, it is still pretty low. (Just for comparison, Davis Baking Powder has 480 mg of sodium in 1 Tsp.)
With Rumford, a single chocolate chip cookie has only 50 mg of sodium. And it tastes just like a regular chocolate chip cookie, so you don't feel like you are missing out on anything. This was huge for me! One of the hardest parts of going loso, was the feeling of missing out on so many things. With Rumford, I love that I can have a treat that tastes great!
