This Pomegranate Plum Sauce from Oxygen is perfect as our featured product this week, given that Rosh Hashana is a mere 4 days away. It is also perfect because it has 0 mg of sodium. That is not a typo! I know -- you are thinking, a sauce with 0 mg? Not possible. And believe me, I triple checked the label on this one just to make sure, and I promise it only has 0 mg of sodium.
I don't know about you, but September is always a very rough month around here. With the start of school, everyone back from their summer vacations at work, and all the Jewish holidays, I usually feel very overwhelmed. Well, this Pomegranate Plum Sauce helps me get underwhelmed. It is finally one product I can pour out of the bottle, and not make from scratch. The easiest way to use this sauce is to pour over your chicken bottoms or tops, cover, put in the oven, and call it a day (or a main dish for Shabbat or Yom Tov!)
But you can also use it as a salad dressing. To thin it out, add a little water and lemon juice, and you have a zero sodium salad dressing. Toss it with some lettuce, apples and nuts, and you have have another great Rosh Hashana dish. You can also use it to spruce up your desserts. Add some water, and pour into a squeeze bottle, and decorate your pavlova or cheesecake!
One note of caution -- not all Oxygen sauces are low in sodium. You really do need to be careful when buying this product, as their sauce bottles all look very much the same. And some of their sauces are very high in sodium. For example, the easily mistaken Pomegranate and Teriyaki sauce has 470 mg of sodium. Certainly a far cry from the 0 mg of sodium of the Pomegranate and Plum Sauce.
However, they do have a few other sauces which I am excited to try. The Marvelous Mango sauce also has 0 mg of sodium (NOT the Mango Curry Sauce!). The Fig Barbecue Sauce has 55 mg of sodium with a serving size of 2 Tbsp. The Onion and Red Wine Glaze has 25 mg of sodium for the same 2 Tbsp serving size. This one actually sounds like it might be great on a pizza with some fresh mozzarella or goat cheese.
You can buy the Oxygen sauces in your local Kosher Supermarket (I found a nice selection in Gourmet Glatt, but I have also seen them in Seasons.) You can also find a few of them in your Kosher section of your local supermarket, such as Stop & Shop.
These sauces are a really nice addition to the Kosher Low Sodium family -- and as a bonus, some of them are Kosher For Passover. We will remember that the next time we are feeling overwhelmed -- Pesach!
