This L.E. Roselli's spaghetti sauce is a real find. It is straight from a jar, which is almost unheard of in the LoSo universe. A 1/2 cup serving of the sauce is only 45 mg of sodium. Obviously, you can make a lower sodium spaghetti sauce yourself from scratch. But there is nothing like grabbing a jar and pouring. Poof, done!
I found this product at Gourmet Glatt, my local Kosher supermarket, but you can also purchase this at Whole Foods. If you live down in Florida, Roselli's is also available in Publix.
Interestingly, just as a comparison, Whole Foods also carries Hoboken Farms Low Sodium Marinara Sauce, which has Chof-K certification. But it has 125 mg of sodium for the same exact 1/2 cup serving. Both of these products are labelled as "low sodium" -- but they are vastly different in their actual sodium levels.
If Roselli's can't be found, go to your local Trader Joe's. Search for the No Salt Added Organic Marinara Sauce. It comes in a bit lower at 35 mg of sodium for a 1/2 cup serving.
The label on the Trader Joe's sauce is "Marinara Sauce," as opposed to "Spaghetti Sauce" on Roselli's. What is the difference? Not much. In the United States, spaghetti and marinara sauce are for the most part used interchangeably. There can still be some differences in ingredients and texture. For KosherLoSo purposes, they are definitely interchangeable. Eden Foods Organic Spaghetti Sauce No Salt Added is another possibility - 25 mg of sodium for 1/2 cup. Another great choice for sauce out of a jar.
Aside from simply heating these sauces up and pouring them over pasta, you can easily cut down recipe time for your recipes. Use these sauces for any recipe that calls for marinara or spaghetti sauce. Our Roasted LoSo Eggplant Parmigiana is a perfect example. Sometimes, a plain Hunt's No Salt Added Tomato Sauce just doesn't do it. You can also find other low sodium sauce options on our Condiments & Sauces page.
You can't go wrong with pasta, so there is really very little room for error here. Buy, open, heat, pour and enjoy!
