I was strolling down the aisle at Gourmet Glatt, when I reached the endcap and spotted this Granolachik product out of the corner of my eye. Given that I had seen some other low sodium granolas in other stores, there seemed to be a chance for this one. Sure enough, when I picked up the Homemade Original Crunch, it was only 10 mg of sodium for 1 oz (or about 1/4 of a cup). My excitement increased when I saw that there were other flavors. Who could resist the Chocolate Chip Crunch also? It has 25 mg of sodium (also for 1 oz/1/4 cup).
I took these babies home, and tried them the next morning -- and boy were they good. I didn't even need to mix them with yogurt. They were good enough on their own as a healthy snack (as long as you don't eat the whole container!) Turns out, when I went to the web site for GranolaChik, there are also three other flavors, which I will have to try as well:
- Peanut Butter - 25 mg of sodium for 1/4 Cup
- Cinnamon Raisin - 0 mg of sodium for 1/4 Cup
- Vanilla Coconut - 0 mg of sodium for 1/4 Cup

To Buy or Not to Buy?
Now here's the biggest catch with this product -- the price. It's actually a bit outrageous -- $10.99 for 10 ounces at Gourmet Glatt, and $11.99 on their web site. Ouch. It is really good. But my food budget doesn't allow for this kind of spending, except as a treat. I would only buy this product if I was traveling and needed some quick and easy snacks to take with me. It is just too expensive.
Other options are to choose one of the above options, which are a lot less expensive, or make your own. We have a great homemade granola recipe (coming this week!) This is by far much cheaper, and probably also even lower in sodium.
Watch out for various granolas in the store. As you can see from the table above, some are higher in sodium than others. Just because one flavor is low in sodium, doesn't mean other flavors from the same brand are. For example, check out the Bear Naked brand. The Honey Almond flavor is 80 mg vs the Fruit & Nut flavor which is 0 mg.)
As always, check your labels!
