Sometimes you find the nicest surprises when you least expect it. This Garlic Bread Spice Blend is just that. I was strolling around my local Home Goods a few weeks ago, and happened to go down the aisle where they have all of their specialty food small bottles. I usually walk right past, figuring 99% of it isn't kosher. And I just don't have the food mindset in Home Goods. Instead, I am generally ogling all the non-essential serving platters and other knickknacks that I can waste my money on. I don't know what possessed me to actually look this time, but it was karma. I found this Garlic Spice Blend -- and it has 0 mg of sodium. That's right, you read right, 0 mg! And then for the bonanza -- it had an OU, clear as day on the front of the bottle. It really doesn't get better than this.
These days, when I can't have salt, garlic has become like salt to me. I put it on and in everything I can. It just adds flavor to everything. So when I saw this blend, I got really excited.
In my pre-loso life, I would often buy the Bellaccico Gralic Bread. It was a quick way to have an appetizer for a weekday meal, and paired well with soup, especially in the winter. But once I started checking nutrition labels, I saw that 57 grams or 1/2 of a small loaf was 300 mg of sodium. I quickly waved that product goodbye. But I did miss a good slice of garlic bread.
Well, this product solves that issue. If you make our Basic White Bread, slice it, and slather it with some Breakstone's Unsalted Butter (lots of it!). Then sprinkle this blend onto it, you have yourself the makings of garlic bread. If you want to make it Pareve, that is easy to do using any unsalted pareve margarine. You can either broil it in the oven, or throw it on your grill for a meat meal.
Another great way to use this spice blend is to pre-make garlic butter. Forget those expensive flavored butters, and make your own. Be careful, for some reason there are no spreadable butters that are unsalted. Not sure why that is, but as per Everyday Cheapskate, you can make your own. You will also save yourself some money. (Note: Make sure not to use your pareve mixer to make your bread spreadable! Your expensive Kitchen Aid will become dairy, and it will be a very sad moment. If you don't have a dairy mixer, invest in a small handheld one. I use it to make my cheesecake.) You can also probably use a dairy blender or Ninja if you have one of those.
I have also used this spread to make Garlic Challah, using my Challah recipe, as well as garlic knots -- using the same challah dough recipe. For the Challah, just roll the the spice into the dough, and sprinkle the top with egg wash and additional spice.
Now, Amazon sells this Garlic Bread Spice Blend, and you can also buy it online directly from Dangold, the distributor for $8.99. However, I paid $3.99 at Home Goods! Really, a steal, and a find on every level.
