French Fried Onions are one of the most surprising foods you will find that are low sodium. When first picking up the package of French's Original Crispy Fried Onions, I had to doublecheck and make sure I wasn't reading it incorrectly. I was that shocked when I saw the nutrition label. And by that, I mean shocked in a good way. I could not believe that they were only 50 mg of sodium per 2 Tbsp. But I really got excited when I found these Fresh Gourmet Crispy Onions in Costco. Only 15 mg of sodium per 1 1/2 Tbsp serving! Other than 0 mg of sodium, it really doesn't get any better than this.
And once I found out that I could eat these, I definitely wanted the huge bag from Costco. The other bonus is of course the price on this deliciousness:
Product | Serving Size | Sodium (mg) | Price | Full Size (In Ounces) | Store | Price Per Ounce |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fresh Gourmet Crispy Onions | 1 1/2 Tbsp | 15 | $7.19 | 24 | Costco | $0.30 |
Oneg Garnish Crunchy Fried Onions | 2 Tbsp | 25 | $3.29 | 5.29 | Gourmet Glatt | $0.62 |
Paskesz Onions to Go | 2 Tbsp | 35 | $2.99 | 5.25 | Gourmet Glatt | $0.57 |
French's® Original Crispy Fried Onions | 2 Tbsp | 50 | $2.49 | 2.8 | Local Supermarkets | $0.89 |
The price at Costco for the Fresh and Gourmet brand 24 ounce package comes in at $0.30 per ounce -- a whopping 50% cheaper than the other brands.
Now, how can we use these crispy onions??? My favorite is with French Fried Chicken. I actually got this recipe for Light-Style Crunchy Onion Chicken years ago off of the back of the French's Crispy Onions, and it is great. When I made it, I actually used a regular egg - not just the egg white, but it can go either way. If you want even more flavor, dredge the chicken in Westbrae Mustard and then coat in the crispy onions.
Crispy Onions are also great as a topping on your favorite soup. They work really well with a tomato soup or split pea. They add some flavor when the salt can't. Or use them as a flavorful addition to your salad.
You can also find a ton recipes for green beans with these onions as a topping. And I am pretty sure that can be translated to every other vegetable on the planet. These are a Thanksgiving staple in many homes, and they can still be that in yours in well.
Crispy onions are an easy way to add great flavor to whatever you are eating, without adding the sodium!
