If you have read up on our Spices page, you know that Chili Powder is a higher sodium spice. Chili Powder is often a key ingredient in enchiladas and tacos, as well as the obvious comfort food of Chili. Every time I saw one of these recipes, I cringed from using it. The amounts of Chili Powder always took the recipe over my own internal gauge for sodium amounts.
1/4 Tsp of McCormick Chili Powder has 20 mg of sodium. When a Chili recipe calls for 3 Tbsp (not tsp!) of Chili Powder, you are literally dumping in 720 mg of sodium. Now granted, this is for the entire recipe, but really, do we need to waste our sodium on this? The answer is -- not anymore.
I found this spice product from Frontier Coop, which really solves this problem. It has 0 mg of sodium, and is certified Kosher from KSA (Kosher Supervision of America.) You can buy this directly from Frontier (along with many other organic spices), or it is also available from VitaCost. I bought one pound of this, and I expect it to last me for a year! More importantly, I no longer feel guilty about using this spice in my cooking!
Check out our homemade barbecue sauce, in which we used the Frontier Coop brand to lower the sodium levels. Frontier can also be used as a substitute in our Shakshuka Avocado Sandwich.
When you go LoSo, spices become an integral part of your cooking. The addition of spices often makes up for the lack of salt in a recipe. Some spices really have very little sodium, but others, like Chili Powder can be higher.
