Boy, was I excited when I found these sun dried tomatoes. My search for sun dried tomatoes that I could eat had been going on for a quite awhile without much luck. I had previously used sun dried tomatoes in a great chicken recipe, that I missed a lot. I also had used them for a sun dried tomato pasta salad which was great to serve at a hot summer Shabbat lunch or Seuda Shlishit. Any jarred sun dried tomatoes I had found were always high in sodium. I had basically chalked it up to one of those foods I would ever eat again. Until, someone suggested this product in one of my low sodium groups. It had only 5 mg of sodium in a serving. I figured, as usual, it probably wasn't kosher. But I was wrong!
I e-mailed the company, Mooney Farms, the manufacturer of the Bella Sun Luci brand. To my pleasant surprise, I got an immediate response. They provided a letter on KCS letterhead, telling me that the product had certification from the Kosher Certification Service in Los Angeles. This was really impressive. But I still didn't recognize the supervision, so I e-mailed my own Rabbi. He confirmed that it was indeed reliable.
I should also add that the representative at Mooney/Bella Sun Luci was SO helpful. She also sent me all the nutrition information for all of their products that were kosher certified, and tried to help me track down stores near me that carried the product.
I finally found the product at my local Stop and Shop, and I proceeded to buy several to keep on hand. I immediately went home and made my Sun Dried Tomato Roast Chicken for that upcoming Friday Night dinner. The best part about this story, is that my kids raved about the chicken. They had NO idea that it was made with LoSo Sun Dried Tomatoes. It was truly a win. Kosher, Low Sodium, and most importantly, it didn't taste like low sodium.
