I consider Pizza Sauce to be a Building Block. And I am not embarrassed about that. Pizza is considered to be a staple in this house, and therefore anything used to create pizza is a building block!
I have tried looking for low sodium Pizza Sauce in multiple supermarkets, and have come up empty. I have seen some LoSo spaghetti or marinara sauces, but never a store bought pizza sauce. (If you have seen one, let me know!) But, this sauce is a pretty good substitute, and as a bonus, it doesn't take very long to make.
I have primarily been using Dick Logue's Pizza Sauce recipe from his cookbook, 500 Low Sodium Recipes. Although I do find it to be a little bitter, and I like my sauce on the sweeter side. I have modified his recipe to make it sweeter, by adding a little bit of brown sugar. If you want it even sweeter, try adding more. This is an ongoing experiment for me, so let me know how yours turns out! There is always room for improvement in the pizza world.
If you are in a rush, you can also use this pizza sauce on your plain pasta, or in any other dish that calls for a marinara or spaghetti sauce. This could be a Lasagna, Eggplant Dish, or a meat dish like meatballs or a roast. It is extremely versatile! When you are LoSo, and don't want to spend your entire day in the kitchen, I find that versatility is the key. This pizza sauce definitely fills the bill.
I usually triple or quadruple it when I make it, and then freeze it for easy future use. Need a quick sauce? Just pull it out of the freezer. Like with my homemade barbecue sauces, I use these 8 oz plastic containers from Amazing Savings. You can also get them on Amazon or elsewhere. Just get them wherever they are cheapest -- you will be using them -- A LOT! (I do try to reuse them also whenever possible.)
These 8 oz containers are the perfect size to hold enough sauce for one large pizza. The sauce can generally keep for a few days in the fridge without a problem. You know, if for some strange reason you want to eat pizza more than once a week. (I don't know anyone who does that...)
Use this on your Pizza My Way with your choice of LoSo cheese and toppings and enjoy pizza again. Pizza Is Possible!!
